Atlus has finally announced today that Persona 5 will launch in Japan on September 15 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. For those who haven’t been following the game, Atlus started a countdown timer on the Persona 5 site that would end at May 5 at 5:30 am PT / 8:30 am ET. It was later confirmed by Atlus that the timer was counting down to a livestream that would reveal “all new information” regarding Persona 5, which many speculated would be the release date.
This morning when the livestream aired those suspicions were confirmed and a Japanese release date was revealed via a brand new trailer. Alongside the release date reveal, this new trailer also shows off some new party members and gameplay. Check out the trailer below:
Although the release date is great news for Japan, many people (including me) had hoped that the release would be global like the Final Fantasy XV release. Although this is not the case, the game has been confirmed for E3 2016 and so a North American release date will likely be announced there.
In addition to the game’s release date, Atlus also announced today that the previously-revealed Persona 5 anime will premiere in Japan in September. They also unveiled a 20th anniversary-themed Collector’s Edition for Persona 5 in Japan. The Collector’s Edition includes an art book, soundtrack with songs from previous Persona games, and series-inspired DLC which includes outfits from Persona 3 and 4. So far a North American version of the Collector’s Edition has not been confirmed.
Persona 5 looks to be one of the best JRPG’s released in years. It’s main competition, Final Fantasy 15, releases globally on September 30th 2016. Although Persona will beat Final Fantasy to shelves in Japan, it’s yet to be seen if the same will happen for a North American release. Right now my prediction is for an October release in North America & Europe.
