The Pokémon Company has announced that the core Pokémon Series games (these are games that don’t include spin-offs) have now sold over a combined 200 million copies worldwide, as of February 29.
With the newly released virtual console version of Pokémon Red, Blue, Green and Yellow, The Pokémon Company’s press release (translated by NeoGAF user, JoeM86) states that the core series sales have been brought up to 201 million.
A lot of people had thought this milestone had already been reached by the main series of Pokémon games but previous figures had included spin-off games. If you do include spin-off games, the Pokémon franchise has passed 279 million units as of February 29th 2016.
The Pokémon Series is the #2 Best Selling Video Game Franchise
The Pokémon franchise is owned by The Pokémon Company and was created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995. The franchise began as a pair of video games for the original Game Boy, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. Even with humble beginnings, the franchise now spans not only video games but includes trading card games, anime, movies, manga, toys and figures.
With The Pokémon Company announcing these news numbers, Pokémon as a franchise has solidified its number two spot for best selling video game franchises of all time. The Mario franchise of games is the only one ahead of Pokémon with a total of 528.522 million copies sold including spin-off games like the Mario Kart series and Mario Party series. If you don’t include spin-off titles and just include Super Mario games, then the number would be 311.46 million copies sold. Third place belongs to Call of Duty with a total of 250 million copies sold.
